Athboy would not be the first place coming to mind for a foodie treat but the Lawrence hotel is changing this. A serious revamp with dynamic and passionate owners has resulted in a unique destination venue. The town is a sleeping tourism giant as the home of Halloween, so roll on the spooky nights.
The operators have cleverly left the old time pub frontage but out back is another stylish bar and dining room as well as an eye catching boutique hotel. Food wise the menu is short which is always a reassurance meaning dishes are fresh and seasonal.
From only six choices which is plenty for me, we took the delicious and modern twisted Lawrence of Arabia chicken Kiev at €24.00. A lot of the hotel theme is based around the local association with that famous film incidentally. We also had my best fish dish of the year so far, a perfectly cooked sole on the bone at just €30.00.
Both mains came with tip top homemade chips A shared generous eton mess for €7.00 and a tea and coffee as well as a bottle of beautiful French rose, had us served up summer on a plate for two al fresco for under a €100.00. There are not many places around reaching this high standard of cooking and friendly service for such value.
With a beautiful location it is certainly worth a try if you want something a tad different with a bit of panache too, in what is a barren enough gastronomic landscape right now. The hotel is especially suited to private events also so overall it has a lot going for it and its magic hospitality carpet is taking this quiet heritage town to historic and dizzy new heights. Well worth the journey to be swept sway.
